Oriental Rugs and other Fine Rugs require special attention. While synthetic installed carpets are typically cleaned hot (steam cleaning) and on the alkaline side of the pH scale, natural fiber rugs require a different approach.

Typically cleaned cold and on the acidic end of the pH scale to stabilize dyes, natural fiber rugs are best handled in our “Rug Spa.” We do offer some in-home interim cleaning options after we have performed a full clean in the Rug Spa, but a true deep clean is a multi-step process that takes hours to complete. We have controlled conditions to perform detailed inspections, rug dusting, washing, spotting, fringe detailing and speed drying in our spa. It’s a little known fact that a typical 8’x10′ wool rug can hold POUNDS of dry soil while looking perfectly clean. Dry soil removal is an important step in a deep clean and can only be performed in our shop with a thorough rug dusting – a gentle treatment relying on vibration, agitation or compressed air to dislodge dry soil PRIOR TO CLEANING. This step CANNOT be performed in home. It often takes hours and special equipment.

While many companies will offer to steam clean or cold water extract your rug in home, we know that this can turn all that dry soil into mud at the base of the rug fibers. This type of improper and incomplete cleaning is a common cause of dry rot. Synthetic rugs and installed synthetic carpet can’t hold near this quantity of soil without showing. This is characteristic unique to the dense natural fiber rugs that have been popular for 100’s of years. If you are curious how much dry soil you have accumulated and you haven’t had it turned to mud by a previous clean, turn your rug upside down and simply vacuum the back side. The mild agitation by the vacuums beater bar will give you a sampling of how much dry soil your rug is hiding. Even after a thorough vacuuming, our dusting process removes loads of sandy grit from a typical rug.
